Shutterfly Cart & Checkout

Another one of my opportunities at Shutterfly was modernizing the cart & checkout experience. The goal of this project was to update the visual design and help simplify and organize the steps of adding projects to the cart and making the checkout experience easier for customers to focus on the important steps such as shipping and payment options.

Role

Lead UX Designer

Date

2025-2026

Outcome

Lowered cart abandonment by 6%

The goal

As Shutterfly moved to a new platform, the cart and checkout team wanted to modernize the old experience (shown below) by updating the visual design and test a more simplified checkout flow.

Ideation

I worked on organizing the cart & checkout architecture and I explored a simplified slide-in cart experience seen in other shopping sites. It was very important to maintain all current cart & checkout features. This work also included creating prototypes for validating some of the changes that were being considered.

Execution

I generated mockups for various cart & checkout states for both desktop and mWeb experiences. I also worked very closely with the engineering team when delivering specs and also to review progress, answer questions and provide feedback. Instead of using traditional user testing methods, the team decided to execute an A/B/C/D test on production to help decide which flow was more successful.

Results

After the testing session was complete, the clear winner was flow D with the simplified slide-in cart and redesigned checkout. It showed higher AOV and lowered cart abandonment by 6%.
